Song Stuck In My Head This Week - 31st January '10 - Journey - Don't Stop Believin'

One of the songs that has not only stood the test of time, but is also currently holding the number 8 and number 2 position in the UK charts is the Journey track 'Don't Stop Believin''. The original version is at number 8 and has been in the top ten in the UK for over a month (the number 2 spot is occupied by the version done by the cast of 'Glee').

It's such a wonderful and uplifting tune and always puts a smile on your face. Despite being 29 years old it still sounds as good as ever.

Short blog this week, I know, normal service will be resumed next week.

Enjoy!!

Journey - Don't Stop Believin'

Just a small town girl
Livin' in a lonely world
She took the midnight train
Goin' anywhere
Just a city boy
Born and raised in South Detroit
He took the midnight train
Goin' anywhere

A singer in a smokey room
A smell of wine and cheap perfume
For a smile they can share the night
It goes on and on and on and on

Strangers waiting
Up and down the boulevard
Their shadows searching
In the night
Streetlights, people
Livin' just to find emotion
Hidin', somewhere in the night

Workin' hard to get my fill
Everybody wants a thrill
Payin' anything to roll the dice
Just one more time
Some will win
Some will lose
Some were born to sing the blues
Oh, the movie never ends
It goes on and on and on and on

Strangers waiting
Up and down the boulevard
Their shadows searching
In the night
Streetlights, people
Livin' just to find emotion
Hidin', somewhere in the night

Don't stop believin'
Hold on to the feelin'
Streetlights, people
Don't stop believin'
Hold on
Streetlights, people

Song Stuck In My Head This Week - 24th January '10 - The Shamen - Ebeneezer Goode

This week one of my friends e-mailed me to say that when going through some of the documents she deals with at work she came across one that had come from Ghana where the person who had signed it off at the Ghanaian end was a Mr Ebeneezer Goode. This, in turn, prompted me to e-mail the entire first verse of the song by The Shamen which I typed from memory!! Then last night I had the DJ play it at the pub I went to for my birthday and it really seemed to lift the mood up a notch.

However, one thing did strike me because today I turned 30 and that song came out in '92 which is over half my life ago!!

Despite all the controversy surrounding it when it came out in 1992 (yes, even at 12 I knew it was about ecstasy and not 'a funny old man' as they tried to tell people at the time) it was always a really good fun track and even now it still sounds great!!

Hope you all enjoy it!!

The Shamen - Ebeneezer Goode

A great philosopher once wrote
Naughty, naughty, very naughty
Ha ha ha ha ha

There's a guy in the place
He's got a bittersweet face
And he goes by the name of Ebeneezer Goode
His friends call him Eezer and he is the main geezer
And he'll vibe about the place like no other man could
He's refined, he's sublime, he makes you feel fine
Though very much maligned and misunderstood
But if you know Eezer he's a real crowd pleaser
He's ever so good, he's Ebeneezer Goode

You can see that he's mischievious, mysterious and devious
When he circulates amongst the people in the place
But once you know he's fun and something of a genius
He gives a grin that goes around from face to face to face
Backwards and then forwards, forwards and then backwards
Eezer is the geezer who loves to muscle in
That's about the time the crowd all shout the name of Eezer
As he's kotcheled in the corner, laughing by the bass bin

E's are Good, E's are Good
He's Ebeneezer Goode
E's are Good, E's are Good
He's Ebeneezer Goode
E's are Good, E's are Good
He's Ebeneezer Goode
E's are Good, E's are Good
He's Ebeneezer Goode
He's Ebeneezer Goode

Has anybody got any veras
Lovely
Ha ha ha ha ha
Ha ha ha ha ha

A great philosopher once wrote
Naughty, naughty, very naughty
Ha ha ha ha ha

Ebeneezer Goode, leading light of the scene
Know what I mean, see
He created the vibe
He takes you for a ride and as if by design
The party ignites like he's comin alive
He takes you to the top, shakes you all around
Then back down, you know as he gets mellow
Then as smooth as the groove that is making you move
He glides into your mind with a sunny Hello

A gentleman of leisure, he's there for your pleasure
But go easy on old Eezer he's the love you could lose
Extraordinary fellow, like Mr. Punchinello
He's the kind of geezer who must never be abused
When you're in town and Ebeneezer is around
You can sense a presence in the sound of the crowd
He gets them all at it, the party starts rocking
The people get excited it's time to shout loud

E's are Good, E's are Good
He's Ebeneezer Goode
E's are Good, E's are Good
He's Ebeneezer Goode
E's are Good, E's are Good
He's Ebeneezer Goode
E's are Good, E's are Good
He's Ebeneezer Goode

He's Ebeneezer Goode
He's Ebeneezer Goode
E's are Good, E's are Good
E's are Good, E's are Good
He's Ebeneezer Goode

Got any salmon Sorted
Ha ha ha ha ha
Ha ha ha ha ha
Eezer Goode, Eezer Goode
Eezer Goode, Eezer Goode
Oh what a carry on, ha ha ha ha ha
Eezer Goode, Eezer Goode
Wicked
Eezer Goode, Eezer Goode
He's Ebeneezer Goode

He's Ebeneezer Goode
Oh what a carry on, ha ha ha ha ha
He's Ebeneezer Goode
E's are Good, E's are Good
Wicked
E's are Good, E's are Good
He's Ebeneezer Goode
He's Ebeneezer Goode
He's Ebeneezer Goode
E's are Good, E's are Good

Song Stuck In My Head This Week - 17th January '10 - Martin Bradford Gago - Numbers

This weeks song is by an artist who I discovered at the local acoustic night I go to on a Sunday. His voice and lyrics totally won me over the first time I heard him (plus he does a brilliant line in cover versions too).

I've found that there are so many talented people out there who aren't getting noticed and it makes me sad. I wish we could have our own modern-day music revolution like they did back in the 60's with pirate radio stations like Radio Caroline that played music that the people wanted to hear and not what they were told that they should like. Today any radio station is determined by a combination of what the producers think is 'cool' and what the record labels decide the radio stations producers should allow them to play. Every week shows like 'X-Factor' and 'American Idol' are pumped into millions of homes, brainwashing them to believe that whoever wins is the person they should be buying and the latest 'hot talent'.

The truth is that, though these people can sing, they are generally going to be in the spotlight for the briefest time before the next season of the show starts and everyone moves on to the next person.

The fact that people power saw Rage Against The Machine get the UK Christmas number 1 over the X-Factor winner made me feel that there is a public shift in the right direction - wanting something more than Simon Cowell's latest product - but we still have a way to go before the movement back towards it being what the public decide is 'cool' that influences what we see and hear but I have no doubts that it will happen.

In the meantime why not go out, discover local artists that are doing stuff that you want to hear, regardless of genre, and support them...share them with others...get them out there and heard by people who may then like them too and carry it on.

In the meantime, if you do like the music in the video of Martin that I'll post after the lyrics then please go and buy his new EP 'The Sound Of Her Wings' on amazon And Martin, If I've got any lyrics wrong then I'm sorry....but I had to work them out for myself!!!

Hope you all enjoy it!!

Martin Bradford Gago - Numbers

I see your contour
As you stand in the door
And I smoke this cigarette
Pebble dash and creepers
Am I just a creep or
An old flash in pans
It's just a moment that passes
But the closest thing that
I've felt to love in years

We're numbers in time

And the beauty of speed
Is present at my dashboard
This posse I take with me
In my travels
I disintegrate
But I feel animated
I'll sing just one note
But it's only for you

And this set of concepts
That runs through my sick head
Not vulgar I promise
But not suitable but
I look in your eyes
And I always hold close
And I won't look away
No I can't look away

And the most absurd thing that I ever did see
Was when a chick met a crow
And the crow she did flee
And that chick she is beautiful
But she can't be free
And the night holds a place
That you never will see

Never will see
You never will see
You never will see
You never will see
You never will see
You never will see
Never will see it

Song Stuck In My Head This Week - 09th January '10 - Lady Sovereign - Let's Be Mates

This week's song was inspired by a hat. Yes it has a lot to do with the person who has been wearing that hat, but really it's the fault of the hat.

The lovely Lady Sovereign is currently in the final series of Celebrity Big Brother in the UK and has this amazing monkey hat. The hat, in turn, reminded me of the great opening track from her second album 'Jigsaw' and it ended up stuck in my head all week (though it did run the gauntlet with 'Spider Pig' simply cos they've been advertising 'The Simpsons Movie' on tv all week too).

When she first came on the scene I wasn't too fussed by her to be honest. She simply didn't click with me. Yet when her second album came out something about it just worked with me and I can't get enough of it.

I initially downloaded 'Jigsaw' as I wanted to get the track 'I'm So Human' as I'd heard it and it was surprisingly catchy which made me wonder if the rest of the album was as good. So I played it and loved it from start to finish and now I can't imagine life without it.

This girl has a lot more going for her than people think and I hope she continues to develop as an artist in a positive way.

As for the monkey hat being the cause of this weeks song....just read the lyrics!

Hope you all enjoy this weeks little gem!

Lady Sovereign - Let's Be Mates

It's like...This

I'm weird and you're weird
Let's be mates.
I consider us a pair so yeah,
Let's be mates.

You like monkeys, I like monkeys.
You like funk, I like it funky.
I hate junkies, don't punch me,
I'm feelin a little drumpy.
Let's get acquainted,
You're simple I like it.
Why are we waitin,
I'm single you like it.

Follow me outside,
I need a chashpoint
You got a light?
Follow me outside,
I need a chashpoint,
Wait I said that twice.

You like my hair, I like it too
To the side, that's not all I do.
Do you mind holdin on for two
While I go do my boogaloo.

I'm weird and you're weird
Let's be mates.
I consider us a pair so yeah,
Let's be mates.

I'm weird and you're weird
Let's be mates.
I like that smile that you wear, oh yeah
Let's be mates.

You like colors, I like purple.
I'm talkin slow like a turtle.
I've had to much herbal.
I feel like im coughing furballs.
Drink cider like wurzzles
I'm fresh and clean like persil
Deliver my words like parcels
And that queen in her castle

Let's get acquainted,
You're simple I like it.
Why are we waitin,
I'm single you like it.
Let's conversate about nothing
It's timeless
And how I run about
With my invisible minders

I'm weird and you're weird
Let's be mates.
I consider us a pair so yeah,
Let's be mates.

I'm weird and you're weird
Let's be mates.
I like that smile that you wear, oh yeah
Let's be mates.

Du-na-na (uh uh)
Du-na-na (uh uh)
Du-na-na (uh uh)
Du-na-na (uh uh)
Follow me outside
Du-na-na (uh uh)
Du-na-na (uh uh)
Follow me outside
Du-na-na (uh uh)

Follow me outside,
I need a chashpoint
You got a light?
Follow me outside,
I need a chashpoint,
Wait I said that twice.
That twice
That twice
That twice
That twice
That twice
That twice
That twice
That twice
That twice
That twice
That twice
That twice
That twice
That twice
That twice
That twice

I'm weird and you're weird
Let's be mates.
I consider us a pair so yeah,
Let's be mates.

I'm weird and you're weird
Let's be mates.
I like that smile that you wear, oh yeah
Let's be mates.

Let's be mates, huh?

Song Stuck In My Head This Week - 02nd January '10 - Black Eyed Peas - I Gotta Feeling

The last week has seen this, already seriously catchy song, played enough for it to get lodged in my head. Black Eyed Peas have had songs over the years that have been catchy but the tracks that have been released from their latest album 'The E.N.D.' have been exceptionally good for their genre.

Of all of them the best one has been the track 'I Gotta Feeling' which really helps raise the spirits and create a good party atmosphere. That atmosphere is something I have seen several times over this Xmas season with people just looking so happy whenever the song's been played and that is surely a skill plus I'm sure that it's 14 week run at the top of the US chart as well as over 4 million digital sales in the US alone can attest to the feelgood factor of it.

Helping it along was the production of David Guetta - a DJ whose own album 'One Love' was one of the most fun albums of 2009 in it's own right. He seems to know how to make brilliant feelgood music right now.

Hopefully this type of music will carry on into 2010 and the year will be as positive as the tunes.

Happy New Year Everyone & Enjoy!!
