Song Stuck In My Head This Week - 27th June '10 - Infant Sorrow - Furry Walls

On Tuesday evening I went to a preview screening of the new Russell Brand movie 'Get Him To The Greek'. The film based on Russell Brand's character from 'Forgetting Sarah Marshall', rockstar Aldous Snow, is laugh out loud funny with some great performances (particularly P.Diddy). It also boasts a great soundtrack with songs being performed by Russell himself.

Russell is a really great singer/performer and so I'm glad that we now are blessed with an album of material. It doesn't matter that it's as jovial as he is as he pulls it off with such aplomb that you end up really wanting to see him touring with Infant Sorrow as you know it'd be a great gig.

The songs are very tounge-in-cheek and in keeping with the man himself, but the songwriters are of high calibre (Carl Barat, Dan Bern, Mike Viola, Jason Segel, Lyle Workman, and Jarvis Cocker) and the songs are well written and extremely infectious. I don't know anyone who's seen the film who hasn't found themselves humming the songs for days after.

'Furry Walls', in particular, is a strong favourite and I've not been able to get it out of my head all week. So I thought I'd share it with everyone else!!

Hope you enjoy it!!

Infant Sorrow - Furry Walls

Yeeeaaaaahhhhh

Yeeeaaaaahhhhh

When the world slips you a Jeffery,
Stroke the furry wall,
Stroke the furry wall,

Furry walls don't bring me down,
Furry walls please stay around,
Furry walls,
Furry walls

Furry walls kiss me to sleep,
Furry walls please help me read,
Furry walls,
Furry walls

Furry walls can take you on a magic carpet ride,
Furry walls surround you till you got no place to hide,
Let your furry fingers be your guide

Furry walls turn out the light,
Furry walls please stay the night,
Furry walls,
Furry walls

Furry walls let's have a date,
Furry walls sit on my face,
Furry walls,
Furry walls

Maybe I'm in heaven with the furry skies above,
All around are furry clouds, look, here's a furry dove,
Let me stroke your furry walls of love,
Furry walls,
Furry walls

Furry walls, I am amazed,
Furry walls, we're in a daze,
Furry walls,
Furry walls

Don't be in a hurry, things aren't the way they were,
Shaggy walls of loveliness, it's a furry blur,
Maybe I'm in heaven with the furry skies above,
All around are furry clouds, look, here's a furry dove,
Let the walls caress you in a showering of love,
Furry walls,
Furry walls

Furry walls, I'm gonna cry,
Furry walls, please lift me high,
Furry walls,
Furry walls

Furry walls
Furry walls
Furry walls

Song Stuck In My Head This Week - 21st June '10 - Katy Perry - California Gurls

Starting out as Gospel singing Katy Hudson, Katy Perry is now best known for creating happy fun pop tunes such as 'I Kissed A Girl' and 'Waking Up In Vegas' and her latest effort is no exception.

'California Gurls' is a catchy tune hooks you in and makes you want to dance and have fun. It has all the feel-good factor that you'd want from a summer pop song. Plus, above all that, it's singing about the place in the world I'm most fond of - California.

Ever since my first trip out there in 2004, California has been somewhere I hate to leave. Aside from the great weather, I find it to be such a chilled out place with really amazing people. Over the years I have made so many friends out there and it always feels like home.

Katy Perry's song just makes me think of hanging out at Venice Beach with my friend Jo and her kids. Grabbing pizza from one of the food places. Sitting under the palm trees watching the world go by. Hanging out by the basketball courts watching the kids shoot some hoops. Looking out on the beautiful blue ocean across the golden sands. It also conjures up thoughts of all the places there that I love to hang out - Barney's Beanery, Aroma Tea & Coffee Company, Mel's Diner on Highland, The Cat & Fiddle on Sunset, #9 in Long Beach, Mama Rose's in Temecula, all the lovely beaches like Seal Beach and just walking the streets seeing what there is to see while spending time with my friends.

This song just makes me want to dance and leaves me feeling so happy. I hope you enjoy it!!

Katy Perry - California Gurls

[Snoop Dogg]
Greetings loved ones
Lets take a journey

[Katy Perry]
I know a place
Where the grass is really greener
Warm, wet and wild
There must be something in the water
Sippin’ gin and juice
Laying underneath the palm trees
The boys
Break their necks
Try’na to creep a little sneak peek
(at us)

You could travel the world
But nothing comes close
to the golden coast
Once you party with us
You’ll be falling in love
Oooooh Oh Oooooh

California girls
We’re unforgettable
Daisy Dukes
Bikinis on top
Sun-kissed skin
So hot
will melt your Popsicle
Ooh Oh Oh

California girls
We’re undeniable
Fine, fresh, fierce
We got it on lock
West coast represent
Now put your hands up
Ooh Oh Ooh

Sex on a beach
We get sand in our stilettos
We freak
And we’re cheap
So play the songs on the stereo

You could travel the world
But nothing comes close
to the golden coast
Once you party with us
You’ll be falling in love
Ooh Oh Ooh

California girls
We’re unforgettable
Daisy Dukes
Bikinis on top
Sun-kissed skin
So hot
will melt your Popsicle
Ooh Oh Oooh

California girls
We’re undeniable
Fine, fresh, fierce
We got it on lock
West coast represent
Now put your hands up

[Snoop Dogg]

Song Stuck In My Head This Week - 14th June '10 - Tim Buckley - Once I Was

During his far too brief career, Jeff Buckley was dogged by people comparing him to the father he barely knew. Jeff really hated it and avoided the connection as much as possible as he wanted people to like him and his work for what they were and not because of who his father was. For me, however, it was my interest in Jeff Buckley that led me to check out his father's music and I'm so glad I did.

Though Tim's career was longer than Jeff's, like his son, it was all too brief. Between 1966 and his death in 1974 he recorded nine albums where he worked through several different musical styles - psychedelic, jazz, folk, avant-garde - while he searched for his own sound.

After leaving his first wife Mary Guibert shortly before the birth of their son Jeff, Tim worked his way up the California coast to LA and it wasn't long before he was signed to Elektra records.

The first album of Tim's I got into was his second release on Elektra, 'Goodbye And Hello'. I bought it for two reasons. (1) It was Jeff Buckley's dad and (2) I liked the cover. Thankfully for me the album was outstanding. There is not a single song on that album that I don't love. My overall favourite, though, is 'Once I Was'.

It has such strong, yet simple, narrative and a melody that tugs on the heart-strings and shows exactly why Tim Buckley's music, though not commercially successful, still influences and enraptures people to this day.

Apologies for the delay, it's been a bit busy this weekend. I hope you all like the new look for the blog and enjoy this week's song! Also, as a bonus, you can also listen to Jeff Buckley's version recorded in 1991 which was his public singing debut...and the only time he ever performed his fathers music.

Tim Buckley - Once I Was

Once I was a soldier
And I fought on foreign sands for you
Once I was a hunter
And I brought home fresh meat for you
Once I was a lover
And I searched behind your eyes for you
And soon there'll be another
To tell you I was just a liar

But sometimes I wonder
Just for a while
Will you remember me

And though you have forgotten
All of our rubbish dreams
I find myself searching
Through the ashes of our ruins
For the days when we smiled
And the hours that ran wild
With the magic of our eyes
And the silence of our words

And sometimes I wonder
Just for a while
Will you ever remember me
Ever remember me

Song Stuck In My Head This Week - 06th June '10 - Teenage Fanclub - Mellow Doubt

In life people will always have their favourite song that makes them feel all romantic. Whether it be 'Love Story' by Taylor Swift, 'Something' by The Beatles or 'Strangers In The Night' by Frank Sinatra, to name but three, love songs have always been a staple of music and something that people can generally relate to. I am no exception. I have a huge romantic, soppy side but being typically me my favourite love song of all time is by a Scottish band that have had some minor hits in the UK but aren't too well known by the masses.

'Mellow Doubt' by Teenage Fanclub was written during the recording of their album 'Grand Prix' when band member Norman Blake fell for one of the girls working in the house they were staying in while recording in the studio in the building. He felt very shy and awkward about expressing just how he felt for her as the band were only there a month and he felt it would seem a bit crazy to express love for someone he'd just met. The song ended up being recorded for the album and, on the morning they were due to leave, he put a copy of the recording of the song on cassette with a note with his address and phone number on it and left it on her bed. She heard the song, got in touch and then they ended up getting together.

By the time I'd heard the back story to the song I already loved the track and believed it to be, in my opinion, the best love song I'd ever heard. The story behind it just made it even more so.

Now I've not been the luckiest in love in my life but it doesn't stop me from feeling all soppy and this song really does make me soppy. I hope it channels your inner romantic streak too!!! Enjoy!!

Teenage Fanclub - Mellow Doubt

It gives me pain, when I think of you
And the things together that we'll never do
At first it's cold, and then it's hot
Tried to be someone that I know I'm not

I'm in trouble, and I know it
How I'm feeling, I can't show it
But these feelings, don't go away

I remember you, lines on your face.
Sharing a moment in the perfect place.
I'm deep in your eyes, and inside your head.
And I try to reach you, when I'm in my bed.

I'm in trouble, and I know it
How I'm feeling, I can't show it
But these feelings, don't go away

There is no choice, in what I must do.
Nothing is greater than to be with you.

I'm in trouble, and I know it
How I'm feeling, I can't show it
But these feelings, don't go away
